Biography

Born in 1930 in Norwalk, Connecticut, Betty Woodman lives and works in New York City and Antella, Italy. She attended Alfred University, School for the American Craftsman in Alfred, New York from 1948 to 1950. Known as a premiere American ceramicist, Woodman has shown work at various institutions worldwide including the Stedelijik Museum in Amsterdam, the Musée des Arts Decoratifs, the Denver Art Museum, and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia. She is the recipient of two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships and a Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship, among others. Her work is in the collections of major institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Musée des Art Decoratifs, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. This would be the first piece by Woodman to enter SJMA’s collection. (SJMA Collections Committee, 2005)
